Nutrition Is Passion
Eating is not only physiology. It's how we tell each other that life is worth living.
Nutrition Is Passion
What you eat determines not only your body but your spirit.
There’s a difference between nutrition as fuel and nutrition as celebration. Most people know only the first. You eat because you’re hungry. You choose what’s cheap, what’s fast, what doesn’t demand much. This is nutrition as metabolism. You need calories, so you take them in.
But nutrition can be more. This is what my father saw and what much of his writing tried to explain. Nutrition is communication. It’s telling someone they matter by feeding them well. It’s telling yourself you matter by feeding yourself well. It’s experiencing passion by making something that counts.
I recognize this most at the table. When I make a meal that is genuinely made, not reheated from a package, I feel something. The attention it takes. The precision of timing. The choice of ingredients. This is not efficiency, this is intention. And intention feels like passion.
This feels simultaneously mundane and profound. You’re only cooking. But you’re also cooking because you believe it matters. Because you believe what you eat shapes you. Because you want energy to do work you care about. This is why nutrition and dreams are connected.
Many people feel depleted. They think it’s psychological. Burnout. Depression. But much of it is simply nutrition. Your body is screaming for nutrients and you’re giving it junk. Of course you feel terrible. Of course you have no energy.
This changes when you take nutrition seriously. Not as diet, but as activity. When you learn to choose food. When you understand what your body needs. When you experience feeding yourself as something that matters, not something that hurries. Then energy changes.
This is passion. Not because nutrition is spectacular, but because you take yourself seriously through it. This is what makes dreams possible. Not great money, not much time, but a body that feels it matters. A mind that is sharp. Energy to work on things you care about.
This is why eating must be restored as central, not peripheral. This is why my father returned to it so constantly. Nutrition is where you feel whether you are valued. By others or at least by yourself.
